The Building Schools for the Future programme is a multi-billion pound initiative created by the government which aimed to show how virtual worlds could be used as a learning tool for schools.
As part of this initiative Manchester's Building Schools for the Future team commissioned Second Places to develop a learning island in the Second Life Teen Grid. Within the virtual learning environment created by Second Places examples of learning content as well as facilities for pupil teacher meetings, classes and virtual learning.
The project also spotlighted how a school for the future could be environmentally friendly with examples of alternative power supplies.
